ABOUT THE INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSION
Duties and Functions of the IEC
(The Constitution (Section 66)

The Independent Electoral Commission is mandated to:
  • Ensure that every election and referendum held is free and fair;
  • Organize, conduct and supervise elections in an impartial and independent manner;
  • Divide Lesotho into constituencies;
  • Register the qualified citizens of Lesotho;
  • Prepare, publicize and maintain a national voters' list;
  • Conduct voter education;
  • Register political parties;
  • Establish and maintain liaison and co-operation with political parties and other interested civic groups;
  • Declare results of elections;
  • Make decisions on complaints about the conduct and results of elections;
  • Conflict Management;
  • Abide by the Constitution and Electoral Act.
IEC VISION AND MISSION

The Independent Electoral Commission Lesotho will contribute to the strengthening of a peaceful, stable and prosperous nation through sustainable inclusive democracy.

The Commission works towards the continuous development and improvement of relationships, which create an enabling environment for the promotion of the delivery of regular and acceptable elections and referenda, which are timely, participatory and accessible to all.

The Commission will engender the development of a capable, motivated and responsive electoral institution whose workforce will encourage and contribute to:-
  • Creation and support of total civic and voter education programme;
  • Cultivation of a spirit of financial and asset management which displays honesty, fidelity and propriety through high standards of safeguard and integrity;
  • Facilitation of the freedom of access to electoral and political systems;
  • Free access and exchange of information for all participants; and
  • Promotion of the enactment of clear and understandable laws and regulations that ease and enable the electoral administration.

The Independent Electoral Commission will continue to be transparent, committed to customer service, ensure the development and nurturing of a talented, committed and empowered staff who always aim for management excellence while remaining, through visionary leadership, accountable to the people of Lesotho.
